How to Measure and Fit a Harness on a Dachshund
Measure the neck and chest, open the clasp, adjust the straps and check two fingers fit. 35 seconds, start to finish.
The short answer
Measure your Dachshund’s neck at its base and their chest just behind the front legs, then check both against the size chart. Fit the harness by opening the clasp at the neck, bringing it around rather than over the head, adjusting the side straps, and checking that two fingers slide comfortably under every strap.
Step by step
- Measure the neck. Run a soft tape around the base of the neck, where the harness actually sits.
- Measure the chest. Take the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. On a Dachshund this is usually the number that decides the size.
- Open the neck clasp. The lockable clasp releases so the harness goes around rather than over the head.
- Adjust for a snug fit. Set the side straps so the harness sits clear of the elbows and does not slide back along a long body.
- Check with two fingers. Two fingers should slide under every strap without forcing.
Why fit matters on a Dachshund
A Dachshund is long through the back and comparatively deep through the chest, so a harness that is set too loose tends to slide backwards, and one set too far forward can rub behind the front legs. Because the neck and chest adjust separately here, you can size on the chest and bring the neck in to suit, rather than compromising on one measurement.
