Types of Dog Lead: Which One Do You Need?
"Dog lead" covers several different designs, and the right one depends on your dog's size, how they walk, and where you walk them. Here is how the main types compare.
- Standard 5ft lead — the everyday choice. Long enough for comfortable pavement and park walking, short enough to keep control near roads. This is what most owners need most of the time.
- Bungee lead — a shock-absorbing section takes the jolt out of sudden lunges, which is easier on your shoulder and your dog's chest. Useful for strong or excitable dogs. See our guide to bungee dog leads.
- Double-ended lead — a clip at each end, so you can attach to the front and back of a harness for two points of contact. Widely used for loose-lead training. Read how double-ended leads work, or shop hands-free double-ended leads.
- Hands-free lead — worn crossbody or around the waist so your hands stay free. Popular for running, buggy walks and walking two dogs.
- Waterproof lead — wipe-clean and odour-resistant for muddy, wet and coastal walks. Browse waterproof dog leads.
- Long line — typically 5–10m, used for recall training in open space. Not an everyday walking lead. See our long dog leads guide.
- Slip lead — lead and collar in one, tightening as the dog pulls. Common at vets and kennels, and it needs care to use safely. Read when to use a slip lead.
- Training lead — adjustable in length with multiple rings, so one lead covers close control and more freedom. See teaching a puppy to walk on a lead.
What Length of Dog Lead Should You Choose?
- Under 4ft (traffic handle) — roads, gates, vets and crowded pavements, where you need your dog close.
- 5ft — the standard for everyday walking. Enough slack for a relaxed walk without losing control.
- 6ft and adjustable — more freedom on quieter routes; adjustable leads let you shorten instantly when you need to.
- 5–10m long line — recall training in open space only, never on a busy pavement.
Lead and Collar, or Lead and Harness?
For dogs that pull, attaching the lead to a harness spreads pressure across the chest instead of the throat. For dogs that walk calmly, a collar is perfectly fine. Our collar versus harness comparison covers the trade-offs, and every lead here works with both.
Dog Lead Questions, Answered
What length of dog lead is best for everyday walking? 5ft suits most dogs and most walks. It gives enough slack for a comfortable stroll while keeping your dog close enough to manage near roads.
Is a lead legally required in the UK? It depends where you are. Many councils operate Public Space Protection Orders requiring dogs to be on a lead in specific areas, and there are separate rules near livestock and on some beaches. Our UK dog lead laws guide explains where and when.
What is the difference between a bungee lead and a standard lead? A bungee lead has an elasticated section that absorbs sudden pulls, reducing the jolt for both of you. A standard lead has no give, which some owners prefer for precise control during training.
Which lead is best for a dog that pulls? A double-ended lead clipped to the front and back of a harness gives two points of contact and more steering, which is why it is the usual recommendation for loose-lead training.
