How to Put a No-Over-the-Head Harness on a Cocker Spaniel
The clasp opens at the neck, so the harness goes around rather than over. 23 seconds, filmed with a Cocker Spaniel.
The short answer
A no-over-the-head harness has a clasp on the neck strap that unlocks and opens right out. You bring the harness around the side of the neck, fasten the clasp, then close the chest clips. Nothing passes over the eyes, and nothing drags over the ears — which matters on a Cocker Spaniel, whose ears are long, heavy and prone to being pulled.

Step by step
- Open the neck clasp. Release the lock and the neck loop opens flat.
- Bring the harness around the neck. Round the side, never over the head.
- Fasten the neck clasp. It closes at the base of the neck, not against the throat.
- Fasten the chest clips. The side buckles close under the body and adjust independently of the neck.
- Check the finished fit. Two fingers should slide comfortably under every strap.

Why this suits a Cocker Spaniel
Cockers are comparatively deep through the chest with a neat neck, and their ear leather is long and heavy. A harness that has to be forced over the head tends to catch the ears on the way past. Because the neck and chest adjust separately here, you can set the chest for the ribcage and bring the neck in without either fighting the other.
