How to Put a No-Over-the-Head Harness on a Dachshund
The harness comes around the neck rather than over the head. 17 seconds, filmed with a Dachshund.
The short answer
A no-over-the-head harness has a lockable buckle on the neck strap. You bring the harness around the side of the neck, fasten the clasp, then close the chest clips. Nothing passes over the eyes or ears.
Step by step
- Start with the harness open. The neck strap is unfastened, so the harness can go round the neck rather than over the head.
- Bring the harness around the neck. It goes round the side. It never passes over the head.
- Fasten the neck buckle. The lockable buckle clicks together at the base of the neck rather than tight against the throat.
- Fasten the chest strap. The side buckle closes under the body and adjusts separately from the neck.
- Check the finished fit. Two fingers should slide comfortably under every strap.
Why this suits a Dachshund
Dachshunds are long through the back with a comparatively neat neck, and many dislike anything being pushed past their face. Because this harness opens at the neck, there is no lifting, no pulling past the ears, and no need to ask a long-backed dog to duck through a fixed loop.
