Dog Harness Size Guide

How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness

Two measurements decide the size. Use a soft tape measure and keep it snug, not tight.

  1. Chest (girth) — measure all the way around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is the measurement that matters most.
  2. Neck — measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would normally sit.

If your dog falls between two sizes, size up. Our harnesses have wide adjustment ranges, so the larger size will almost always give a better fit than squeezing into the smaller one.

Breed suggestions are a guide only. Individual dogs vary, so always measure rather than choosing by breed.

Getting the Fit Right

  • You should be able to slide two fingers flat under any strap.
  • The chest strap sits behind the front legs, not in the armpit, so it does not rub.
  • Check the fit again after a few wears — straps settle, and puppies grow quickly.
  • Re-measure growing dogs every few weeks rather than buying ahead.

Which Harness Style?

Once you have the size, the style depends on how your dog walks. A front-clip attachment helps with pulling by turning your dog gently towards you; a back-clip suits dogs who already walk calmly. Read our no-pull harness guide, or compare a harness against a collar.
