The best harness for a Sprocker Spaniel is one sized from your own dog's neck and chest measurements, with front and back lead points, a back handle and a fastening that doesn't need pulling over those long ears. Because a Sprocker is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and an English Springer Spaniel, size varies a lot from dog to dog. On our size chart, Cocker Spaniels are listed under M and Springer Spaniels under L, so a Sprocker could fit either of those sizes, or a different size altogether. Your tape measure decides.
Here's how to size a Sprocker, and what makes a harness work well for a busy, muddy, feathered spaniel.
Why Sprocker sizing needs a tape measure
With a crossbreed, you can't rely on a breed name. Depending on their parents, a Sprocker might be built more like a compact Cocker or more like a taller, rangier Springer, and two dogs from the same litter can turn out quite differently. Their feathered coat can also make them look bigger, or smaller, than they really are.
So measure, and treat breed suggestions as a starting point. Our size guide says breed suggestions are guidelines only, as individual dogs vary.
How to measure your Sprocker
- Neck: measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would usually sit.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
- Go through the feathering, keeping the tape snug against the body rather than resting on top of the fur.
- Measure with your dog standing, and do it twice to be sure.
Our measuring and fitting video shows where the tape goes.
M or L? Reading the chart for a Sprocker
| Size | Neck | Chest | Spaniels listed on our chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| M | 35-50cm | 40-71cm | Cocker Spaniel |
| L | 40-60cm | 55-83cm | Springer Spaniel |
The two sizes overlap between a 55cm and 71cm chest, and between a 40cm and 50cm neck, so check both measurements. If your dog is still between sizes, our size guide says to size up for comfort, as the harnesses have wide adjustment ranges. Smaller Sprockers and puppies may need S or smaller. The full harness size chart runs from XXS to XL.
What a Sprocker needs from a harness
- Two lead points. Every Trail & Glow harness has a front and a back D-ring. The back ring suits relaxed walks, and the no-pull front ring can help with lead control when there's a scent to follow.
- A back handle. Handy for a steadying hand at stiles, gates and road crossings, or for keeping your dog close when you meet livestock or other dogs.
- Nothing over the head. The neck clasp opens, so the harness wraps around your dog's neck and clips shut. Long ears and a wriggly spaniel make that a lot easier.
- Separate neck and chest adjustment. Three buckles, including a lockable neck clasp, let you fine-tune the fit for your dog's own shape.
- Breathable, quick-dry mesh lining. Useful for a dog who finds every puddle and stream on the walk.
- Reflective strips along the front and back for darker mornings and evenings.
All our harnesses are strength tested.
Fitting tips for a feathered, busy dog
- Two fingers under every strap. Snug enough not to slip, loose enough to slide two fingers under without forcing.
- Chest strap behind the front legs, not in the armpit, so it doesn't rub as your dog runs.
- Check for knots under the legs. Feathering can tangle where the straps sit, so a gentle brush after muddy walks helps.
- Let it dry, wash it cool. Let the harness dry between walks, and when it needs a wash, wash it on a cool wash, ideally inside our laundry bag.
- Re-check as your dog grows. Young Sprockers can keep filling out after they look fully grown.

Quick questions
What size harness does a Sprocker need?
Our chart lists Cocker Spaniels under M and Springer Spaniels under L, so a Sprocker could be either, but it depends on your dog. Measure the neck and the chest, check both against the chart, and size up if your dog is between sizes.
What harness is best for a Sprocker that pulls?
One with a front D-ring. Clipping the lead to the front ring can help with lead control while you work on loose-lead walking.
Can a Sprocker puppy wear the same harness as an adult?
Probably not for long. Buy for your puppy's current measurements, use the adjusters as they grow, and re-measure every couple of weeks.
