What Length Dog Lead Should I Get? A UK Guide

What Length Dog Lead Should I Get? A UK Guide

For most everyday UK walks, a 5ft lead (about 1.5 metres) is the length to start with. It keeps your dog close enough on pavements and around people, with enough slack to sniff and walk comfortably. From there, add a different length for a specific job: a very short handle for crossings, a longer lead of around 2 metres for quieter paths, a long line for recall practice, or a hands-free lead if you like your hands free.

Here is how each length works in real life, with examples from our own range so you can see the actual measurements.

Short: for roads, crossings and busy places

Near traffic, shorter is safer. The Highway Code asks dog parents to keep their dog on a short lead on pavements, roads and paths shared with cyclists or horse riders. You don't need a separate short lead for this: you can simply hold a standard lead nearer the clip. If you use our hands-free lead, the 30cm Traffic Handle Add-On clips on when you need your dog right by your side, and it can also clip straight onto the back D-ring of your dog's harness as a grab handle.

For the full picture on where leads are needed, from roads to parks with local rules, see our guide to dog lead laws in the UK.

5ft: the everyday all-rounder

A 5ft lead is roughly 152cm. It gives your dog room to move naturally on a pavement or trail while staying short enough to keep them close near roads, other dogs and people. That's why most of our fabric leads are 5ft, including our reflective Trail & Glow leads and our tweed leads.

  • Small dogs: our Lightweight Mini leads are also 5ft, but with a narrower 1.5cm width and a lightweight clip, like the Heritage Plaid Lightweight Mini Lead.
  • Wet-weather walks: our Mulberry Waterproof Lead is 5ft too, with a lockable swivel clip and a waterproof handle.
  • Darker evenings: our Trail & Glow leads, such as The Khaki One, have reflective light stitching and a padded neoprene handle.

Around 2 metres: more room on quieter paths

A lead of around 2 metres (about 6ft 7in) gives your dog a little more freedom on quiet paths, while still keeping them within reach. It's worth knowing that in England, GOV.UK says that on open access land you must keep your dog on a lead no more than 2 metres long between 1 March and 31 July, and at all times around livestock. So if you walk on open access land, check your lead's length before you go.

Our Hands-Free Double Ended Dog Lead is 210cm, a touch over 2 metres when used at full length. Because you can wear it across your body or around your waist, how much slack your dog actually has depends on how you set it up.

Long lines: for recall practice and open spaces

A long line is for training and safe exploring, not for pavements. Our 5M Long Line gives your dog 5 metres to explore while you keep hold of the other end, which is handy while you work on recall. Our long dog leads guide covers long lines in much more detail.

Hands-free and double-ended leads: one lead, several ways to walk

If you'd like one lead that does several jobs, a multi-way lead is worth a look. Our hands-free lead has three integrated D-rings, so you can wear it across your body, around your waist, hold it as a normal lead, or clip both ends to the front and back D-rings of your dog's harness. Only the lead itself has the three D-rings; the extension and traffic handle are simpler add-ons. Our double-ended dog leads guide explains the different setups.

A note on clips: lockable or not?

Length is only half the decision. The clip matters too, especially with a strong or excitable dog.

  • Gold clips on our leads are lockable. That includes our Plum Tweed lead, our standard 5ft Colour Drops leads, the hands-free range and the 5M Long Line.
  • Our Forest Tweed, Mulberry Tweed and Oxford Tweed leads don't have a gold clip, so they aren't lockable.
  • Lightweight Mini leads are made for small dogs and use a lightweight black clip.

If a lockable clip matters to you, check for "lockable" in the product description before you buy.

Quick questions

What is the standard dog lead length in the UK?

5ft, or about 152cm, is the length you'll see most often, and it suits most everyday walks.

Is a 2m lead too long for town?

Not if you hold it short near roads, but a 5ft lead is easier to manage on busy pavements. You might keep a 5ft lead for town and a longer one for quiet paths.

What length lead is best for a puppy?

A light 5ft lead is a good first lead for most puppies. Our puppy leads guide covers choosing their first one.

Where can I compare lead types and materials?

Our best dog leads guide compares fabric, rope, waterproof, slip and retractable leads side by side.
